10 DAY PHOTO SAFARI

TRIP SUMMARY - 3 JUN 2017 - 13 JUN 2017

We begin our Safari by flying to Lusaka, the Capital of Zambia. We then catch a connecting flight to the South Luangwa National Park. The airport is in Mfuwe, ZA (MFU).  (All internal flights are included in the base safari price.)

The itinerary below allows us to become absorbed in the wonder of South Luangwa National Park beside the Luangwa River, one of the greatest parks in Africa. 

TRIP DETAILS

3 JUNE - 7 JUNE FLATDOGS CAMP – 5 NIGHTS

On June 3 we will arrive in Lusaka and be met and assisted to check in for your internal flight to Mfuwe.  We urge you to arrive in time for the morning flight, but another leaves at 4 in the afternoon.   From Mfuwe our camp is only 30 minutes away. 

Luxury ensuite safari tents with large windows all around mean you can see and hear animals feeding in camp and hippopotamus honking to each other in the river.  Tents are spacious with king or twin beds, mosquito netting, electric lights and plug sockets for re-charging batteries (UK style plug sockets).  These tents also include ensuite, semi-open  bathrooms with shower, WC and basin. 

If you arrive on an early flight, there is time to settle into camp and have some lunch and your first afternoon safari. 

Each afternoon, we meet for tea at at 3:30, then you’ll head into the park at 4pm, ready to explore this magnificent wilderness. Guides take huge pride in their work, being able to identify numerous alarm calls and to track animals and try to anticipate their next move so as to position you for the best sightings.   Once it’s nearly dark,  we can carry on game-viewing with a spotlight, searching for  interesting nocturnal residents, like the leopard, lion, porcupine, civet, genet, owls and hyaena.  You will return to camp at around 20h00 in time for dinner and to relive your sightings with us!    

Each morning we'll enjoy an early breakfast of toast and cereal, tea and coffee at  5:30am before heading out at 6 on a morning game drive, exploring the park, taking the sightings as they come  with our guide detailing all we see and adding observations drawn from his years of experience in the Park.    You will head back to camp at around 10am, in time for breakfast or a brunch/lunch type meal.  Then there is time to relax during the heat of the day and enjoy a dip in the pool  or a siesta after our early start?  

We may also choose a walking safari from camp one morning.  Depending on sightings we may also choose an all day safari, with a picnic lunch and an armed scout so that we can explore further into the Park returning to camp either just after sunset or at 8pm as usual. 

If you are interested in village life in this area, we can also happily organize a visit to the nearby Mfuwe village, including our anti-poaching base and some of the local community projects, including the schools.   

JUNE 8 & 9 Kapamba BUSHCAMP – 2 NIGHTS

On June 8 we will transfer to Kapamba Bushcamp,  a small, remote bushcamp in the southern region of South Luangwa Park.  Set on the banks of a shallow, spring-fed river, Kapamba is surrounded by some of the park's richest wildlife.  Here's the description we've received:  

Watching an elephant take a dip in the river can be quite an experience when you're lounging in your own private bath the size of a plunge pool!  The central bar and dining room is positioned under a huddle of matumi and sausage trees, with a wide deck that stretches out with views of the river.   There are only four spacious en-suite chalets which have been cleverly designed so they feel simple yet utterly original.  The rooms are open-fronted with wide verandas and river views, twin showers and sunken stone plunge pools - the ultimate in bush indulgence. Clever wrought-iron shutters are drawn each evening so that you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the African night without worrying about unwanted visitors wandering into your room whilst you sleep.  Kapamba offers game drives, night drives and walking safaris as well as special sundowners taken in the middle of the Kapamba river, so you can enjoy your cool drink while your feet are dipped in they crystal clear shallows!   

JUNE 10 - JUNE 12   FLATDOGS CAMP – 3 nights

On the 10th of June, after early activities at Kapamba, we will return to Flatdogs.   For our last three nights of safari we will stay in North African styled rooms, light, airy spaces with cool stone walls and a verandah.   Safaris will continue as before, aiming to catch even more sightings and outstanding photographs.  

13 June Internal flight back to Mfuwe

We will transfer back to Mfuwe airport in time for onward  flights to Lusaka and home.
